How to price a cake
Add up four costs: ingredients, supplies like the box, board and decorations, your time at an hourly wage, and overhead such as power, pans and insurance. That is your cost to make. Add a profit markup on top.
With the defaults ($18 of ingredients, $6 of supplies, 4 hours at $20, $5 of overhead and a 20% markup), the cake costs $109 to make and sells for $130.80, about $5.45 a serving for 24 servings.
Pricing per serving
Many bakers quote custom cakes per serving, because it scales with size. Once you know a fair per-serving price for your usual design, you can quote any size quickly, then add extra for detailed decorating.
The formulas behind it
Every result cell is a plain spreadsheet formula, so you can check the math or rebuild it yourself.
| Cell | Result | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| B11 | Labor cost | =B4*B5 |
| B12 | Total cost to make | =B2+B3+B11+B6 |
| B13 | Cake price | =B12*(1+B7%) |
| B14 | Price per serving | =B13/B8 |
| B15 | Profit after your wage | =B13-B12 |
