By Wendy Zhang ·

You’ve been typed as a Soft Summer, or a friend keeps saying you look washed out in black, and now you need to know which colors to actually buy. The soft summer color palette can feel vague because most descriptions stop at “dusty” and “muted.” Below we give you every shade by name and hex code, then cover how to tell if you’re one, what to do with neutrals, metals, makeup and hair, which colors to wear sparingly, and how Soft Summer differs from its close neighbor, Soft Autumn.

The soft summer color palette is a set of muted, cool-leaning, light-to-medium colors: dusty blue, soft teal, soft lavender, antique rose, misty blue and willow green, with gray-based neutrals like mushroom, taupe and soft navy. Each shade has a little gray mixed in, which matches the soft, low-contrast coloring of Soft Summer people.

What is the soft summer color palette?

Soft Summer is one of the 12 seasons in seasonal color analysis. It sits inside the Summer family, so it leans cool, but it’s the most muted of the three Summers. Think of a coastal morning in fog: blue-gray water, sage on the dunes, faded roses. Nothing is neon, nothing is jet black, and nothing is golden.

Three qualities define the palette:

  • Muted (low chroma). Every color looks like it has been softened with gray. That’s the “soft” in the name.
  • Cool-leaning. The undertone sits close to neutral with a slight cool lean, so colors read as blue-gray, rose-gray or green-gray rather than warm.
  • Light to medium. Most shades fall in the middle of the value range, with a few deeper neutrals for structure.

Best colors and accents

Best colors Hex Accents Hex
Dusty blue #6787A1 Muted mauve #99788B
Soft teal #669090 Seafoam gray #96B1A8
Soft lavender #8C829E Soft plum #7D667D
Antique rose #B48B99 Rose taupe #9C7F81
Misty blue #90A9BB Gray blue #7E949F
Willow green #738C7C Heather #9F91A6

The six best colors are your everyday shades: sweaters, shirts, dresses, anything worn near the face. The accents add variety. Soft plum and muted mauve are good for evening, while seafoam gray and heather work like colored neutrals.

When we built the palettes for our tool, we placed each of the 12 seasons in its own region of lightness, chroma and undertone, and the site checks that no palette drifts into a neighbor’s territory. For Soft Summer, that region is medium lightness, low chroma and a cool lean. It’s why the soft summer palette has no pure, saturated hues at all.

How do you know if you’re a Soft Summer?

Soft Summer coloring is blended rather than striking. Hair, skin and eyes sit close together in depth, so nothing jumps out. Common signs:

  • Hair: ash brown, mushroom brown or dark ash blonde, often called “mousy.” Natural highlights look beige or gray, not gold or red.
  • Eyes: gray-green, gray-blue, soft hazel or soft brown. The iris often looks smoky or blended rather than clear and sparkling.
  • Skin: neutral to slightly cool. Gold jewelry can look a little yellow on you, and silver looks fine without being dramatic.
  • Contrast: low. In a black-and-white photo of your face, your hair, skin and eyes look like close shades of gray.
  • The tell-tale reaction: bright colors seem to wear you, and black makes you look tired, while dusty shades make your skin look smooth and even.

Soft Summer with hazel eyes is common. The hazel is usually grayed, green-gray or brown-green with no strong gold ring. If your hazel has a bright golden center and your hair has copper or honey highlights, look at Soft Autumn as well.

The quickest way to check is our free seasonal color analysis tool. It runs in your browser on a selfie, and nothing is uploaded. It measures your skin, eyes and hair against all 12 seasons and uses the whites of your eyes to correct for lighting. Prefer no photo? An eight-question quiz gives you a season too. Then the draping check places pairs of colors next to your face, the way an analyst holds fabric, so you can see which one evens out your skin. Results show a palette for your season and a close second, which helps if you sit on the Soft Summer and Soft Autumn border.

Neutrals in the soft summer color palette

Neutrals do most of the work in a closet, and the wrong ones (black, stark white, camel) are the most common reason a Soft Summer outfit looks “off.”

Neutral Hex Use it for
Soft white #EBEEF3 Shirts, tees, blouses instead of optic white
Mushroom #BAAEA7 Knitwear, trench coats, light trousers
Taupe #A69894 Bags, shoes, cardigans
Soft gray #797C81 Suits, skirts, everyday trousers
Charcoal gray #505257 Coats, blazers, the black replacement
Soft navy #3B4D61 Jeans, formal wear, outerwear

Soft white has a faint cool tint, so it looks clean without glaring. Charcoal gray and soft navy give you depth when an outfit needs structure, such as for work or a winter coat.

An easy formula: one neutral as the base, one best color near the face, and one accent in a scarf, earrings or a bag. A soft navy blazer, an antique rose top and a heather scarf is a complete outfit straight from the soft summer color palette.

Metals, makeup and hair for Soft Summer

Metals

Brushed silver, pewter and soft rose gold. Matte or brushed finishes suit the muted look better than mirror-shiny metal. Rose gold works because its pink tone is gentle, while bright yellow gold tends to look harsh next to Soft Summer skin.

Makeup

  • Blush: soft rose or mauve.
  • Lips: rosewood, dusty rose, muted berry.
  • Eyes: taupe, gray-brown and smoky plum shadows. Soft charcoal or gray-brown liner reads softer than jet black.

Keep finishes satin or soft matte. High-shine or neon makeup fights the palette the same way bright clothes do.

Hair

Ash brown, mushroom brown and soft beige highlights. If you color your hair, ask your stylist for cool or neutral-ash tones and fine, blended highlights. Brassy gold, copper and strong red shades usually clash with the soft, grayed quality of Soft Summer coloring. The same cool, ashy rule applies to the other Summers: True Summer suits cool ash brown and ash blonde, and Light Summer suits ash and beige blonde.

Colors to wear sparingly (and the black question)

These eight shades are too bright, too dark or too warm for Soft Summer coloring. Keep them away from your face, or use them in small amounts:

Wear sparingly Hex Why it’s hard for Soft Summer
Black #181818 Too dark and harsh; deepens shadows
Pure white #FFFFFF Too bright; makes skin look gray
Hunter orange #E46529 Too warm and saturated
Bright yellow #FFE339 Too clear and warm
Hot pink #F12B9E Too saturated
Rust #A95133 Too warm and earthy
Lime #A5E758 Too bright and yellow-green
Cobalt #0250A5 Too saturated, even though it’s cool

So, can Soft Summer wear black? Yes, with placement. Black under the chin creates a contrast far stronger than your natural coloring, so the eye goes to the black and your face looks tired by comparison. Black shoes, belts, bags or trousers are fine because they sit away from your face. For tops and coats, charcoal gray and soft navy give the same polish.

The same logic explains the rest of the list. Color analysis treats chroma (how far a color is from gray) as one of three dimensions, alongside hue and lightness. The Wikipedia overview of color analysis describes chroma as “the difference between a pure hue and a pure grey,” and it traces the link between colors and the four seasons back to Johannes Itten’s 1961 book The Art of Color. Soft Summer coloring is low chroma, so high-chroma shades like hot pink and cobalt overpower it.

Soft Summer vs Soft Autumn

Soft Summer and Soft Autumn are the two most muted seasons, which is why they’re so often confused. Both have low contrast and blended coloring. The difference is the lean: the soft summer color palette leans cool, and Soft Autumn leans warm.

Soft Summer Soft Autumn
Undertone Cool-leaning neutral Warm-leaning neutral
Signature colors Dusty blue #6787A1, antique rose #B48B99, soft lavender #8C829E Moss #7C895E, cinnamon #A36948, soft coral #D58F7D
Light neutral Soft white #EBEEF3 Oyster #F0E7D9
Dark neutral Soft navy #3B4D61, charcoal gray #505257 Soft brown #82614C, olive drab #837D5A
Metals Brushed silver, pewter, soft rose gold Brushed gold, bronze, rose gold
Lips Rosewood, mauve Nude-rose, terracotta
Hair Ash brown, mushroom brown Soft golden brown, honey, muted copper

The two palettes overlap. Both include a soft teal (#669090 for Soft Summer, #598D8B for Soft Autumn) and a mushroom neutral, and Soft Autumn’s muted lilac sits close to Soft Summer’s heather. If those shared shades all look good on you, the deciding test is a warm color against a cool one. Hold cinnamon next to antique rose, or brushed gold next to brushed silver. Whichever one makes your skin look smoother is your answer. Both muted seasons sit far from Deep Autumn, whose dark, rich shades such as wine and pine green overwhelm soft coloring.

How Soft Summer compares to True Summer and Light Summer

The other two Summers share the cool undertone but differ in lightness and clarity:

  • True Summer is the coolest Summer, with medium depth and slightly clearer colors: dusty blue #5F8AB2, raspberry #B45A78, cornflower #7298CB. Its colors are a step brighter than Soft Summer’s.
  • Light Summer is lighter and airier: lavender #C3B5DD, powder blue #A7CBE5, light rose #E6ACBE. These pastels can look too light and sweet on Soft Summer coloring.

If raspberry and cornflower make you look vivid rather than loud, you may be a True Summer. If powder blue and light rose look fresh rather than faded, Light Summer may fit better.

Putting the soft summer palette to work

Start small. Swap the tops and scarves you wear most for dusty blue, antique rose or soft teal, and replace black and optic white with charcoal gray and soft white. Neutrals and pieces worn near the face make the biggest difference. Save cobalt, hot pink and black for shoes, bags or prints mixed with softer colors.

If you’re still unsure whether you’re a Soft Summer or one of its neighbors, run a selfie or the quiz through our free seasonal color analysis, then use the draping check to compare cool and warm colors next to your face. Once your season is confirmed, the palette above becomes a shopping list.

Questions people ask

Can soft Summer wear black?

Soft Summer can wear black, just not right under the face. Pure black is far darker and harsher than Soft Summer coloring, so it tends to make shadows look deeper and skin look gray. Keep black for shoes, belts, bags or trousers, and pick charcoal gray (#505257) or soft navy (#3B4D61) for tops, coats and dresses.

What does a soft Summer look like with hazel eyes?

A Soft Summer with hazel eyes usually has a soft, grayed hazel: green-gray or brown-green with no strong gold ring, set against ash or mousy hair and low overall contrast. Dusty blue, willow green, soft teal and seafoam gray pick up the green in the eyes without overpowering them. Warmer, golden hazel eyes often point toward Soft Autumn instead.

What hair colors complement a cool Summer color palette?

Cool, ashy shades complement Summer palettes best. For Soft Summer that means ash brown, mushroom brown and soft beige highlights. True Summer suits cool ash brown and ash blonde, and Light Summer suits ash and beige blonde. Brassy gold, copper and strong red tones usually clash with the cool, grayed quality of Summer coloring.

How do I know if I am a soft Autumn?

Soft Autumns share the muted, low-contrast look of Soft Summer but lean warm. Signs include soft golden or ash-brown hair with warm highlights, hazel or green eyes with gold flecks, and skin that looks better in brushed gold than silver. If moss, cinnamon and soft coral flatter you more than dusty blue and antique rose, you're probably a Soft Autumn.

Is soft summer warm or cool?

Soft Summer is cool-leaning, not icy. Its undertone sits close to neutral with a slight cool lean, which is why its colors look grayed rather than blue-cold. That neutral lean is also why Soft Summer borrows a few shades from Soft Autumn, such as soft teal and mushroom, while skipping warm earth tones like rust.

What colors should soft summers avoid?

Soft Summers look best when they keep very bright, very dark or very warm colors away from the face. In our palette, that list is black, pure white, hunter orange, bright yellow, hot pink, rust, lime and cobalt. These colors are fine in small doses or away from the face, such as in shoes, bags or a printed scarf mixed with softer shades.

What is the difference between soft summer and soft autumn?

Both seasons are muted and low contrast. The difference is undertone. Soft Summer leans cool, so its best colors are dusty blue, antique rose and soft lavender with silver and pewter. Soft Autumn leans warm, so its best colors are moss, cinnamon and soft coral with brushed gold and bronze. Both share soft teal and mushroom.
